Dentistry

We recommend at least once yearly comprehensive dental examinations for all patients. Regular appropriate dental care helps your horse chew their food fully, promotes appropriate absorption of their diet, and prevents choke, tooth abscesses, discomfort, and other conditions.
Dental services we offer include power floating, molar extraction, wolf tooth extraction, periodontal disease diagnosing & management as well as dental radiographs for advanced diagnosis.

EOTRH

Equine Odontoclastic Tooth Resorption and Hypercementosis (abbreviated for obvious reasons to ‘EOTRH’) is a very painful condition involving the destruction of 1 or more teeth with or without excess cementum deposition. The incisors are most commonly affected, but occasionally the canine teeth or premolars are also affected. The cause of this disease is still unknown, but likely involves multiple contributing factors. Your veterinarian will check your horse for evidence of this disease at each dental. Radiographs can be used to evaluate the degree of resorption of the tooth roots. Symptoms include: pain biting with the front teeth (such as when biting carrots), quidding feed, gingivitis, gumline recession, and abnormal cementum deposition at the gumline. There is no known treatment aside from removal of the affected teeth. Luckily, horses tend to do very well and go on to live a pain-free life with removal of the affected teeth.
