Emergency Care
We are available 24/7 for emergency coverage for our active patients.
All clients are required to have a first aid kit on the farm so that we can direct you in its use when appropriate.
This includes:
Banamine (active ingredient drug name is flunixin) – for colic, fever, pain
Thermometer (every barn should have AT LEAST 2! If there is only one, it never works when you need it)
Antihistamines (Benadryl, Claritin, Zyrtec – also known as diphenhydramine, loratadine, cetirizine) – hives and allergic reactions
Milk of magnesia (Maalox) and a dose syringe for administering orally - colic
Additional optional emergency items:
Dexamethasone – a steroid for severe allergic reactions
Oral antibiotics – generally SMZ’s or doxycycline
Sedatives – acepromazine or dormosedan – these can be used at our direction for horses that are agitated (fireworks or other unexpected stimuli), caught in a fence/stall bars, choke (esophageal obstruction) etc.
Broad spectrum antibiotic eye ointment (without Dexamethasone) – always safe to use in a swollen eye
Antibiotic wound ointment (Neosporin)
